Description

Acumen Fund is offering a new Acumen Leadership Essentials Course that anyone can participate in. The course is free but you must register as a group (min: 2 people; max: 6) and commit to learning together for six weeks. The content in this course was developed based on 7+ years of experience training Acumen Fund’s Global and Regional Fellows. It also shares some lessons Acumen Fund has learned after 10+ years of investing in companies that change the way the world tackles poverty. Acumen leadership model is about the moral imagination and entrepreneurial skills needed to create sustainable and scalable social innovations.

How it works

There are no in-person teachers or facilitators for this course. You will work through the course with a group of classmates we call your “lab group”. You must find your lab group before you sign up for the course. If you need to find a lab group, check out the +acumen meetups or feel free to organize your own.

Course content will consist of readings, online videos and discussions/activities. Each week, you will receive an email with the materials for the upcoming lab. The materials will consist of two things:

  • Lab prep (1-2 hours): To be completed before your lab group meets
  • Lab guide (typically 2 hours): To be completed together with the rest of your lab group when you meet. Upon completing each lab, the lab group leader for the week will be asked to fill out a simple feedback form to share the group’s progress.

At Acumen Fund, everybody believe in “learning by doing”. You will get as much out of this course as you put in. There is much about this course that will seem challenging, which is appropriate since this is about leadership development. You will need to be self-motivated to make it through all 6-weeks. Some of the exercises are designed to push you out of your comfort zone. You will need to build relationships with your lab group and conduct meaningful discussions with no clear authority in the room.

Many of the issues we will discuss will not have a clear right or wrong answer. This may seem frustrating, but as our CEO Jacqueline Novogratz likes to say “it is more important to live the questions”. We will do our best to share Acumen’s current point of view on these issues, but it is more important that you come away with your own views and opinions. We encourage you to question assumptions, to share your point of view and respectfully challenge your lab group.

Cоurse content

The content in this course was developed based on 7+ years of experience training Acumen Fund’s Global and Regional Fellows. It also shares some lessons Acumen Fund has learned after 10+ years of investing in companies that change the way the world tackles poverty. Acumen leadership model is about the moral imagination and entrepreneurial skills needed to create sustainable and scalable social innovations. The 6-week beginner level course is brief compared to Acumen Fund’s year-long Fellows programs, so you will get just a taste of Acumen Fund’s leadership training.

The main focus is on leadership. Through this you should better understand yourself, the challenges of the work of poverty alleviation, and discover some clues for how you might get started. It will help you to connect more closely with other like-minded individuals in this course, so that you can start to build a community of learners that will benefit you on your journey.

How to apply

You have to register online here by 23 September 2013. The next course starts on 25 September 2013 and will last until November 8th.
